“My English Language Learning Journey”

In Singapore, most Singaporeans are exposed to English at a young age. It was necessary because of all the different races that reside in this country; the country needed a common language for all of us to communicate and express our ideas and thoughts.

I was exposed to English at a young age too. Unfortunately, it was never my forte. I had struggled with it during my course of study in Primary, Secondary education and even till now; mainly in composition and report writing. I am bad at writing long story, perhaps due to my lack of interest in non-fiction books.

After the first week for school, I came to realise the amount of reports and proposals I would have to write, during my study in the university, is tremendous. I fear I would not able to write my reports well. Hence I am prepared to put in more time and seek helps and advice from professors and my friends.

  2. Hi Marcus

I could relate to the points in your reflection. At this point in university, we will definitely require high command of English in writing reports as well as in presentation.

Your reflection started off with a brief introduction on your understanding of the importance of English. In my opinion, you might want to add on and include your overall thoughts on your learning journey.

In summary, I enjoyed reading your reflection as the points raised were straight to the point.

  3. Hello Marcus,

As Brad put it, no one has nothing to improve on his/her English. I don't think anyone in our class will come out and say,'Hey guys my English is very good and Brad is wrong.'.

My point is that everyone here taking Effective Communication has something they want to improve about themselves, and some more than others. Whether you have one or ten things you want to improve on does not matter. Remember that the tortoise won the race because he did not stop. Similarly, it is not about how many things you want to change about yourself, but how strong is your will to go about doing it.

You definitely seem to have the guts to go out of your comfort zone. I used seem because that's my first impression of you (and first impressions count). So go forth and do your best.

    Sincerely,
    Xue Yuan

  4. Thanks, Marcus, for this generally clear and concise post. Like many of your classmates, you state that English is not your forte but that you now realize how important it is. This is as good a place as any to reaffirm its value ans to work on improving your use.

Here are a couple areas you need to consider:
    1) It was necessary because of all the different races that reside in this country, the country needed a common language for all of us to communicate and express our ideas and thoughts. >>> (run on sentence _ comma splice) See https://owl.english.purdue.edu/exercises/5/26/5 for an explanation.

    2) I was exposed to English at a young age too, unfortunately, it was never my forte. I had struggled with it during my course of study in Primary, Secondary education and even till now, mainly in composition and report writing. >>> (same issue)

    3) I fear I would not able to write my reports well, hence I am prepared to put in more time and seek helps and advice from professors and my friends. >>> (same issue)

    Let's work on these.

  5. Hi Marcus,

I can definitely relate with you as we both shared the same ideas during our first intro post. I like the way how your post was precise, short and simple. Not only that, it even includes your feelings while adding facts into your post. A very good job done!

Let's learn to improve together regarding our command in English and may the odds be in our favor. It will be a great time working together with you to achieve a common goal to do our best in this Effective Communication module!

  6. Hello Marcus,

I can definitely relate to the points in your reflection. I also fear that i will not be able to write my reports well. You are not alone. I look forward working together to improve our command in English and report writing skills.

For your post, i like the way how you started off with a brief introduction on your understanding of the importance of English in Singapore. You also reflected the importance of english to you and the willing to improve. I like the way how your reflection was short and simple about your feelings. Great effort.

    Sincerely,
    Nathanael Franklin
